THE FEEL: If you arrived at Villa Bali thinking you are, well, in Bali, you are not alone. This nature haven is tucked away like a secret in Lock Road, but despite the rain when we visited one night, it had an almost-full crowd. What started out initially as a plan for a fine-dining restaurant eventually led to a 20,000 sq ft chill-out bar, set on a sloping terrain and divided into various sections to maintain a sense of privacy. Among them are 3 huts that have become so popular, a $200 minimum spending fee has been imposed (with plans to build more). Our favourite, however, is the 6-week old island bar, with an authentic thatched roof and supported by a 'joglo' (a traditional Indonesian structure)- and get this - surrounded by water flowing into an infinity pool. An Asian art gallery operates on the second level and plans are in the pipeline to convert the vacant food centre next to it into a mid-range dining hub.
THE FOOD: Aside from typical bar food, Villa Bali has a North Indian menu. The chef hails from Kinara's, so feel safe to feast on tandoor spicy prawns (2 pieces for $20, 4 pieces for $38) and Punjabi samosas ($4.50). We liked that they serve top-of-the-range vodkas such as Grey Goose and Belvedere. The wine list, while not award-winning vintages, is balanced, and you can get quality selections such as Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir ($82) and Paul Jaboulet Aine Chateauneuf de Pape 'Les Cedres' ($108).
TO DO: The staff will usually hand late-birds a candle before switching off the lights. You can even nurse your drink till the next morning.
VERDICT: The fastest getaway to Bali without leaving town.
